Castanea pumila (Allegheny chinquapin)

Full Description

Castanea pumila is a shrub or small tree of Eastern United States. Its leaves are toothed. They are glossy above and pubescent beneath. In late spring, mature chinquapins flower. The flowers are showy bright tan catkins. After pollination, spiny burs develop from female flowers and eventually split in two, releasing tiny acorn-sized edible nuts called a "chinquapins".
Edible Parts: The shelled chinquapin nuts are edible raw.
